About the Pastor

Pastor Yvoma Butler was born in Mobile, Alabama. She is the third child and oldest daughter of five children born to the late Bishop Bryant Robinson and Mother Louise Robinson. When she was four years old, her father moved the family to Springfield, Massachusetts looking for better opportunities in which to raise his family. She attended elementary schools in Springfield, Mass. and in 1963 graduated from Westfield University with a degree in education. She taught for four years in the public school system in Springfield.

During a revival in September in 1953, Pastor accepted Jesus as her Savior and was filled with the Holy Ghost. She remembers that when she got up from the altar everything in the sanctuary seemed so much brighter than before. Pastor Butler served in her father’s church, Macedonia Church of God in Christ, as Sunday School teacher, VBS director and teacher, member of the choir, Christmas program director, State youth secretary and whatever capacity where she was needed. She fondly remembers being a part of a five-girl singing group called the Spiritualaires that traveled throughout the state singing at churches.

In 1967, while attending the National Youth Congress she met, and the following year, became the bride of Reverend William Howard Butler. They soon were blessed with a beautiful son Michael David Butler. Pastor took a teaching position in the Paterson school system at Public School Number Ten and worked there for thirty-one years before her retirement in 1998.As a member of Gilmore Memorial Church, Pastor served in the choir and various auxiliaries. She was responsible for reorganizing Vacation Bible School. She most enjoyed working as president of the young adult fellowship. While there, she attended Gilmore Bible Institute and Hawthorne Bible School.

In 1982, Pastor William Butler was called of God to establish Grace Gospel Church. As a family, the Butler, along with a few saints began the task of building a church to the glory of God. Putting her shoulder to the wheel, Pastor Y could again be found doing whatever her hands found to do to help the work of the Lord progress. Many times, during those early years, she could be seen mopping water in the basement, cleaning the sanctuary, making curtains, painting the walls, singing in the choir, as well as directing worship and teaching Sunday School and VBS. There was no job too small or too big for her to try to tackle. All to the Glory of God!

At the homegoing of her beloved husband, Pastor Y received the call to the pastorate in 2000 with the blessing of the membership. Since that time the church has continually been blessed. The foundation laid by our founding pastor has been firmly established on the Word of God. The church has increased in number, but more importantly in spirit. The vision that God gave our founding pastor has continued to be revealed in the things that God has brought forth.

With great love and affection, Pastor Yvoma Butler recognizes how supportive the church family has been throughout the last few years. She is extremely grateful to have each and every member in her life. She also thanks God for the many children He has given to her and her late husband, for they have truly been a blessing. Last, but not least---Pastor is thankful for all of her grandchildren who give her joy!
